It takes one tough cookie to take on the part of the Dark Lord
of the Sith
Brooke really shines in her portrayal of Star Wars's central figure, Darth
Vader. The producers were taking a calculated risk by casting a girl in
the role, but any fears were allayed by the masterful way in which Brooke
plays Vader.
Calling upon her experiences as a grade school student, Brooke reached
deep within herself to understand the tension that motivates Vader to
lead the Empire against Leia and the rebels.
Perhaps the most grueling part of playing Vader was wearing a mask for
the majority of the shoot. Cut off by a lack of peripheral vision, Brooke
had to rely on stage managers and fellow cast members to make her marks
and achieve the correct movements.
As if that wasn't hard enough, Brooke had to study the art of lightsaber
dueling along with cast member Seth, who played Vader's nemesis, Obi-Wan
Kenobi.
Brooke and Seth spent their free time backstage practicing for the lightsaber
duel that is among the film's highpoints. During one take, Brooke accidentally
struck co-star Seth in the face with her laser sword. After taking a moment
to make sure he was alright, the fight continued, and so did filming.
Brooke made a fearsome and formidable Vader. She is at her best when Vader
is called upon to command the troops who are under his control.
